Grand Challenge Scholars Program

What is the Grand Challenge Scholars Program?

This program is for individuals of any discipline that are determined to solve the National Academy of Engineering's (NAE) 14 grand challenges of the 21st Century. This program requires students to select a challenge to focus on to acquire experiences in research, global perspectives, service learning, entrepreneurship, and interdisciplinarity

Why did I join the Grand Challenge Scholars Program?

I joined because I wanted to see others working on the challenge that I am interested in and get new perspectives from everyone in the program. I joined because I want to be apart of a group of problem solvers. I joined because I love overcoming challenges. I love challenges. I learned one of my mentors, a graduate student at Georgia Tech named Aakash Bajpai, was a member of the University of Maryland, Baltimore Chapter. I knew I wanted to follow in his footsteps. I looked at all the Grand Challenges and was amazed that people in my college were interested in making an impact on a global scale. I know that the impact made by the cohorts in this program can create a ripple effect of motivated engineers not just on my campus, but globally. I want to be the cause of this ripple effect by spreading information about this program to students on campus. The more individuals who are willing to make a change, the more likely change will happen.

Advanced Personalized Learning

I selected this challenge because I want to change the educational system. I want to focus on high school students because those students are coming from different middle schools people attained different levels of education. At this age, students need to figure out what works for them sooner rather than later. As a college student, I had to find what works for me for each subject I am taking. There are no guided notes or teachers that are holding students accountable. I believe in serving others the best way I can. I want to provide a service to educate them in a way that will allow the user to find what works for them, preferably before coming to college. I want to educate students in their math classes either by making an app.
