Reach Together Tutoring Program
I have volunteered at the Reach Together Tutoring Program for two semesters. The Reach Together Tutoring Program is an organization through the University of Maryland, Baltimore County that focuses on tutoring math to students in Baltimore who are performing math at one-grade level or more in math. I tutored third graders at Cherry Hill Elementary Middle School twice a week with one hour of planning. I have 52 hours of tutoring and planning. I plan on continuing tutoring to learn how other students learn (to apply that to developing an app), grow as a leader, and learn how to be a better tutor to students. I also plan on looking for other experiences that relate to my selected challenge.
Reflection
I learned a lot when I started tutoring. I learned that I needed to help student have a growth mindset as opposed to fixed mindset when it comes to math. I learned that I can have a fixed mindset about things in my life, I seen myself in my students when they wanted to give up and tell themselves they can't do the math because it seems too hard. I learned that I need to take care of myself in order to show up better for them. I enjoyed tutoring at times, but at the same time it can be really stressful. I had to learn how to adapt, be assertive, and ask for help when unexpected things happened. Tutoring helped me realized that a little support can go along way. I have seen my students grow in their confidence in doing math and make progress when doing work. Tutoring helped me to realize that I have a lot of growing to do as a person,
